North Road planning update: Maindy, Briardene, Currys12.00.00am GMT Mon 23rd Feb 2009
The Gabalfa Liberal Democrat Focus Team has been busy alerting residents to three major planning issues at North Road. The first concerns an application to redevelop the Briardene Road Safety Centre on North Road. Plans for the site are at an outline stage, and firm details won't be fixed until detailed proposals are submitted. However, an indicative proposal is seeking permission for 53 flats on the site, of which 30% would be given over to affordable housing. As part of the plans, 36 parking spaces would be made available, and a new pedestrian access to Maitland Park would be provided. Meanwhile, residents are also being urged to comment on plans to convert the upstairs of the Maindy pub into seven flats. A planning application has been submitted which would see the upper floors of the pub extended at the rear to make room for the flats. No parking provision is included in the application. To have your say on either of these planning applications, you can contact the Planning Department either by writing to the Chief Regulatory Services Officer, City Hall, Cardiff, CF10 3ND or by sending an e-mail to developmentcontrol@cardiff.gov.uk - but be sure to quote the relevant application number! The reference for the Maindy application is 09/137/W for, and 09/161/W for the Briardene application.
Finally, the Focus Team has learnt that work will begin within weeks to redevelop the site of the old Currys store on North Road. Back in 2006, planning permission was granted for 39 flats and 10 houses to be built on the site. This followed a massive campaign by your Focus Team against a previous proposal which could have seen five storeys of flats built on the land. Recently, there had been speculation that a fresh application might be forthcoming for the site - but your local Lib Dem councillors have now learnt that the owner of the site wishes to push ahead with the previously-agreed plans. For more information on any of these schemes, contact Councillor Ed Bridges.
